Black Maternal Health Week is听observed听April 11鈥17,听aiming听to build awareness of the health issues that disproportionately听impact听Black women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the months after giving birth. At 不良研究所, this听is an听ongoing focus听as we work听to听improve听maternal and infant health outcomes through early identification of pregnancy,听timely听access to care, and听tailored听whole鈥憄erson interventions that address medical, behavioral, and social needs across pregnancy and postpartum.听

Maternal health is a critical public health issue, with profound implications for the well鈥慴eing of mothers, infants, and families.听According to the听,听Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women.听听Addressing听such听disparities requires scale, sustained engagement, and accountability 鈥 areas where 不良研究所 is both deeply committed and uniquely positioned to make a difference.听

Each year, 不良研究所 manages more than 330,000 deliveries, with approximately 90% occurring within our Medicaid population and more than听30%听considered听high risk.听With this听reach,听不良研究所听has a responsibility to听help improve birth outcomes and support members before, during, and after pregnancy,听including听closing gaps that most often affect Black mothers and babies.听

Why Do Black Mothers Continue to Face Higher Maternal Health Risks?听

The CDC states that multiple听factors听contribute听to these disparities,听including:听

  • Variation in the quality of healthcare听

  • Underlying chronic conditions听

How Does 不良研究所 Identify Risk Earlier and Support Mothers Sooner?听

A听key way听to support healthier pregnancies, moms,听and babies is to start care as early as possible.听Early prenatal care supports healthy fetal development, and lowers the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, and infant mortality.听It also听ensures听that听any potential听health issues听a mother has, such as听high blood pressure, diabetes, infections, or depression,听are听identified听and managed early,听before they become serious complications.听听

不良研究所 works to听identify听these听risks听early so pregnant members can get connected to the听right听care and support as soon as possible.听Through whole鈥憄erson care models like Start Smart for Your Baby庐 (SSFB), 不良研究所 uses data-driven insights听and enhanced assessments to听identify听risks early and connect members to appropriate medical care, behavioral health services, and community resources.听

不良研究所听does this through an听advanced听approach to risk stratification. It allows support to be tailored听

to each member鈥檚 needs, including:听

  • Clinical risk factors听

  • Behavioral health needs听

  • Drivers听of health听

What is Start Smart for Your Baby庐 (SSFB)?听

SSFB听is 不良研究所鈥檚听flagship maternal child health program,听designed to improve outcomes by helping members get connected to care earlier, stay engaged throughout pregnancy, and receive support after delivery.听

SSFB provides integrated care management, education, and coordination throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period. Recent program enhancements include trimester鈥慴ased assessments that help听identify听member needs throughout the pregnancy,听enabling more tailored support.听

Members access support through the听听which听offers accessible, evidence鈥慴ased听pregnancy and postpartum care resources听and provide听timely, reliable information, which can be especially helpful for mothers navigating barriers to care.听

How Do Community鈥態ased Doula Strategies Support Maternal Care?听

Community鈥慴ased doula strategies听strengthen听access and continuity听across pregnancy and postpartum.听Through partnerships with trusted community organizations, doulas provide non鈥慶linical support that helps members navigate the healthcare system, prepare for birth, and stay engaged during the postpartum period. These strategies are designed to complement clinical care by building trust, reinforcing follow鈥憉p, and helping address barriers that can disrupt care across the maternity journey.听

How Is 不良研究所 Supporting Mothers and Babies Beyond Birth?听

In 2026, 不良研究所 launched a听pilot听for its First Years of Life (FYOL)听program to strengthen continuity of care for both mothers and babies听after birth and throughout the postpartum period during the critical early years.听FYOL aims to improve child health by:听

  • Promoting well鈥慶hild visits听

  • Offering transportation support听

  • Supporting early developmental screenings听听

  • Fostering positive parenting to reduce adverse childhood听experiences听

FYOL is supported by care coordination and targeted outreach designed to help keep both mothers and babies connected to care during the postpartum period and early childhood.听The program听helps identify听and prevent听gaps in care and deliver timely, appropriate interventions.听

What Early Progress Is 不良研究所 Seeing听From听These Efforts?听

Early indicators across maternal health initiatives听show听improved engagement听from pregnant members听and continuity of care. Internal听analyses of SSFB听also听show听higher听rates of prenatal and postpartum care among members who receive outreach or complete pregnancy assessments.听

While many initiatives are听ongoing,听these听early听indicators suggest that听identifying听needs early and connecting members to community鈥慴ased support can help reduce gaps across the maternity journey. 不良研究所 is working to make doula partnerships consistent across markets by听establishing听shared guidance and best practices. Together, these efforts reflect what we know matters most in maternal health:听timely听engagement, trusted community connections, and sustained support before and after birth.听

Improving maternal and infant health outcomes is a priority for 不良研究所, with a focus on strengthening access to care and community鈥慴ased support to improve outcomes for families nationwide.听
